Revolut launches eSIM service designed for users who travel

The eSIM market is booming, with more and more users turning to virtual SIM cards for their mobile phones, especially when travelling and wanting to avoid roaming charges, which operators often continue to keep too high. Recently, eSIM giant Airalo closed a $220 million funding round, demonstrating how investors are also paying attention to the phenomenon. Now it is Revolut, the global fintech company with over 60 million customers worldwide, is launching its eSIM offering with global data plans that are also available to over three million customers in Italy, allowing them to obtain mobile data abroad and stay connected without roaming charges and unexpected interruptions.

The offer is available to all Italian Revolut customers who have an eSIM-compatible device. Once installed, customers will be able to top up their data wherever they are, without the need for a physical SIM card, with prices starting at €1.50 for 1GB and various data plans available up to 20GB. By connecting the eSIM, customers can use the Revolut app without using up their data plan: so if a Revolut customer lands in a country and does not have access to data, they can still access their Revolut app and use all products and features, including data top-up.

With the eSIM installed via the Revolut app, Ultra customers will have access to a new benefit included in their plan: 3 GB of mobile data to use in over 100 countries, with a monthly update. The cost of using mobile data abroad has increased in recent years, and data rates in non-European countries are almost always outside standard offers.

Elyas Sadou, Revolut’s eSIM product owner, comments in a statement: “At Revolut, we use technology to simplify our customers’ lives, and that’s exactly what our eSIM does. It offers seamless access to mobile data, eliminating the inconvenience of high prices or the need to purchase and organise a physical SIM card. Whether they are in the United States, Australia or Egypt, our customers can easily obtain a data plan with just a few taps on their phone and instantly share breathtaking photos of their trip with friends and family. It’s a game changer for those who love to travel.

According to Revolut’s Global Travel Spending Report, the top ten countries most visited by Italians, in addition to the more traditional European destinations, include the United States and the United Arab Emirates. Furthermore, Italians are increasingly choosing destinations such as Argentina, Sri Lanka and Japan, which are experiencing a significant surge in popularity, along with Southeast Asia and parts of Latin America.

In light of these new trends, the launch of eSIMs guarantees travellers Revolut’s support from the beginning to the end of their journey. From booking accommodation through Stays, to accessing lounges in over a thousand airports, to peace of mind with emergency medical and dental cover for Premium, Metal and Ultra plans (insurance terms and conditions, paid plan terms and fees, and subscription fees apply). Customers can also enjoy experiences for tours and attractions, as well as spend like locals with competitive currency exchange rates in over 30 currencies. Now with eSIM, customers no longer have to worry about exorbitant roaming charges.

The launch of eSIMs in Italy is Revolut’s latest move in its expansion into the telecommunications sector. Revolut recently announced the launch of mobile plans in Europe, bringing innovation to a sector that needs greater transparency and flexibility and a better customer experience, just as it did with the banking sector.
