SmartCityLab Milan Human+AI urban sustainability meets innovation

Today’s cities account for over 70% of global emissions, consume most of the world’s resources and face increasingly complex and interconnected problems: congestion, pollution, social inequality, energy inefficiency, ageing populations, healthcare needs and inclusion. Milan, like many European cities, is at the centre of this transition: it must become smarter, more inclusive and more resilient without sacrificing quality of life and social cohesion.

This is the backdrop for SmartCityLab Milano, the urban innovation laboratory launching Human+AI, a programme designed to be a laboratory for sustainable, digital and scalable solutions. The programme, which is free and equity-free, starts on 27 October and will help ten start-ups validate their business models and experiment with projects capable of generating a concrete impact on the environment, the economy and citizenship.

Human+AI: technology and humanity for the city of the future

Human+AI is based on the integration of artificial intelligence and human values, with an approach that prioritises ethics, sustainability and collaboration between start-ups, businesses and institutions. The jury of experts, investors and representatives from the corporate world selected the ten companies that best interpret this vision, evaluating environmental and social impact, team strength, innovation and scalability potential.

“SmartCityLab Milano is looking to the future as a benchmark for urban evolution, fuelled by the energy and vision of the start-ups selected by the Human+AI programme. Through concrete, scalable solutions aimed at having a positive impact on citizens and urban areas, these innovative companies will help transform Milan, and beyond, into smarter, more inclusive and sustainable cities,” says Laura Prinzi, general manager of SmartCityLab Milano. – Thanks to the ecosystem it is creating, SmartCityLab Milano is becoming an accelerator of real change, capable of anticipating the needs of tomorrow’s cities, testing solutions in real environments and generating a systemic and lasting impact.

The ten startups of Human+AI

MineCrime processes and provides analytics on urban crime through spatial and temporal analysis software integrated into a web-GIS, useful for urban planning and security.

MyTeseo, an application currently being tested with families of patients with multiple pathologies, for the integrated management of information and communication between caregivers, associations and operators.

PowandGO, Italy’s first charge sharing service that allows individuals to share energy for electric vehicles, promoting widespread and collaborative electric mobility.

Niino, an end-to-end AI-based platform for optimising non-urgent medical transport, improving the efficiency and accessibility of healthcare mobility services.

Next promotes energy independence with modular and sustainable off-grid solutions, inspiring new autonomous lifestyles with low environmental impact.

Klara Wearables manufactures fashionable air-purifying glasses that filter out pollution, pollen and bacteria thanks to patented technology inspired by Venetian design.

FlexyGrid develops a digital platform for energy flexibility management, using predictive analytics to optimise consumption in buildings and energy communities.

Lobbi, a civic-tech platform that digitises the governance of residential communities, simplifying voting and meetings, and integrating AI to reduce the energy consumption of buildings.

360° sustainability: a new urban paradigm

Human+AI startups address sustainability in all its dimensions: environmental, with technologies to reduce emissions and optimise resources; social, with services that are more accessible, inclusive and focused on people’s well-being; economic, with business models that create shared and circular value.

This vision translates into real experimentation in the field, where innovation, public governance and civic participation converge to rethink the way we experience the city.

An ecosystem for the responsible city

SmartCityLab Milano, Italy’s only incubator dedicated to sustainable smart cities, is the result of a collaboration between the Municipality of Milan, Invitalia and the Ministry of Enterprise and Made in Italy (MIMIT). It is managed by a network led by PwC Italia, with LifeGate Way, LifeGate, Lhub / Underdogs, Webgenesys and Designtech (publisher of Startupbusiness). Through projects such as Human+AI, the Lab consolidates Milan’s position as a European laboratory for urban sustainability, where technology, ethics and impact intertwine to build more liveable and responsible cities.
