Let us make it clear straight away that this is not a ranking of the \u2018best Italian angels\u2019. Sifted measures something else: it counts how many Sifted 100 companies are in the investors\u2019 portfolios and, where the number is the same, considers the average revenue growth of the portfolio companies. But this is precisely why the data is interesting. Within a leaderboard dominated by VC funds, accelerators, public operators and structured networks, individual investors also feature.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The <a href=\"https:\/\/sifted.eu\/leaderboards\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Investors &amp; Lenders ranking<\/a> therefore takes the 100 companies from the Sifted 100 Southern Europe 2026 and looks at who has funded them. The main criterion is the number of start-ups in the ranking that each investor has in their portfolio. The table then shows the average CAGR, i.e. the average annual compound growth rate of the investee companies\u2019 revenues, and the average rank, the average position occupied by those companies in the Sifted 100.  <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The distinction matters. An investor may climb the rankings because they have many companies in the list, even if not all of them are in the top positions. Alternatively, they may have few portfolio companies but those that are very high in the rankings. This is the case with Joe Zadeh, ranked 44th in the Top 50 investors &amp; lenders, with two companies in his portfolio in the Sifted 100 \u2013 Lexroom and Jet HR \u2013 but with an average rank of 3. Lexroom is second in the overall ranking, Jet HR fourth.    <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Among Italian angel investors, Gianluca D\u2019Agostino tops the list, ranking tenth on the leaderboard with five portfolio companies: Qomodo, Tot, Trustfull, Contents and Axyon AI. He is followed by Raffaele Terrone, in sixteenth place with four portfolio companies, and David Clarke, in twenty-fifth place with three. Luca Ascani is twenty-seventh, Martin Olczyk thirty-third, and Davide Dattoli forty-first. Qomodo features in the portfolios of Gianluca D\u2019Agostino, Luca Ascani and Giorgio Tinacci. Jet HR features in those of David Clarke, Luca Ascani, Joe Zadeh and Giorgio Tinacci. Lexroom brings together Joe Zadeh and Francesco Zaccariello. TextYess appears in the portfolios of Raffaele Terrone, David Clarke and Francesco Zaccariello. It is a partial snapshot, but not an insignificant one. The leaderboard has a clear limitation: it does not measure returns, does not indicate the amounts invested, and does not distinguish between those who led a round and those who participated with a smaller stake. Its value lies elsewhere: it allows us to understand the dynamism of angel investing and the ability of certain individual investors to identify early on companies that go on to become some of the fastest-growing start-ups in Southern Europe.       <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Here\u2019s the key point. The capital invested by angel investors differs from that of VCs: it is smaller, often more flexible, and more closely tied to the investor\u2019s personal reputation and their relationship with the founders. But when it works, it can get to the start-up first.  <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The presence of nine Italian business angels in Sifted\u2019s Top 50 Investors &amp; Lenders should be seen not as an individual accolade, but as a sign that this segment of the market is becoming more professional: individual investors who build portfolios, identify founders in the early stages and, at least in some cases, end up alongside the more established names in southern European venture capital.<\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1050\" height=\"1356\" src=\"https:\/\/www.startupbusiness.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/WhatsApp-Image-2026-05-22-at-18.29.08.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-170821\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Who are the nine angels?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The nine profiles demonstrate just how diverse angel investing is. By its very nature, an angel investor is not a professional investor in the strict sense of the term: they invest their own capital, often in an informal manner, and bring experience, a network and a close relationship with the founders to the table. The list includes founders, tech managers, serial entrepreneurs, accelerator operators and investors who are also active through club deals or organised networks.  <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gianluca D\u2019Agostino is the founder and managing partner of The Techshop, a venture capital firm based in Milan. Before moving into fund management, he worked as an angel investor, backing dozens of European start-ups and collaborating with business angel networks and venture capital firms. In the past, he has also led deals alongside Italian Angels for Growth and Club degli Investitori, such as the AppQuality deal.  <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Raffaele Terrone is a co-founder of Scalapay and currently CEO of Desia, an AI-driven fintech startup. He describes himself as an active angel investor with over 20 companies in his portfolio. His profile fits that of a \u2018founder angel\u2019: a fintech entrepreneur who invests in other early-stage companies, bringing particular expertise in product development, fundraising and international growth. The sources consulted do not indicate that he is a formal member of any angel investor club.   <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">David Clarke comes from the enterprise software sector. He served as CTO at Workday following the acquisition of Cape Clear, and currently also acts as a venture partner at Frontline Ventures and a senior advisor at Acadian Ventures. He appears on the Sifted leaderboard as an angel investor, but his profile is more international than Italian: an operator-investor with extensive experience in HR tech, SaaS and scaling product and technology teams. In Jet HR\u2019s funding round, he is listed among the international private investors, alongside Joe Zadeh.   <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Luca Ascani is the founder and CEO of Lambda Alpha, an investment firm specialising in seed-stage investments. In Jet HR\u2019s pre-seed funding round, he is listed among the Italian angel investors and founders involved in the deal. His approach lies somewhere between personal angel investing and a structured investment vehicle: he does not appear as a member of an angel network, but rather as an investor operating through his own platform.  <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Martin Olczyk is the managing director of the Techstars programme in Turin (which concluded in February 2026), where he led acceleration programmes, following roles in other accelerator programmes in Berlin and Amsterdam. He is listed as an angel investor on the leaderboard. His profile brings a different dimension to the list: not only is he an angel investor and founder, but also an accelerator operator involved in investment and advisory activities, particularly regarding tech and B2B start-ups. According to publicly available sources, there appear to be no formal links to Italian club deals.   <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Davide Dattoli is the founder of Talent Garden and co-founder and chairman of Mirai. As an angel investor, he states that he has invested in over 20 companies, including Bending Spoons, WeRoad and Will Media. He also features on the Investors\u2019 Club website with a dedicated profile. His profile is that of a founder-angel with a strong presence in the Italian digital ecosystem: training, communities, co-working spaces, start-ups and now early-stage investments too.   <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Joe Zadeh was one of Airbnb\u2019s first employees, where he worked for around ten years, rising to senior product roles, including VP of Product and Head of Airbnb Experiences. He now works in consultancy and investment. He is one of the angel investors listed in the funding rounds for Jet HR and Lexroom. Here too, there is no indication of any formal affiliation with an Italian club; what is significant is rather his profile as a global player who has been involved in a number of high-growth Italian deals.   <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Francesco Zaccariello is the founder of eFarma and currently the managing director of Atida Italy. Netcomm describes him as an entrepreneur and business angel; he has been a member of the Investors\u2019 Club since 2023. He features on the Sifted leaderboard alongside Lexroom and TextYess. In Lexroom\u2019s pre-seed funding round, he is listed among the angel investors, alongside Joe Zadeh and other individual investors.   <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Giorgio Tinacci is the founder and CEO of Casavo, a proptech company established in 2017. As an angel investor, he features in Jet HR\u2019s pre-seed round and on the Sifted leaderboard alongside Jet HR and Qomodo. He is the kind of founder who reinvests in startups at a similar stage and with a similar business model: technology, marketplaces, fintech and business tools. According to the sources consulted, there is no record of him being a public member of an angel investor association.
