Designtech, after Design Momentum comes the AI Adoption Hub

The second edition of Design Momentum, the accelerator programme promoted by Designtech (publisher of Startupbusiness) to support innovative start-ups and SMEs in the sectors of design, furniture, materials, home technology and advanced manufacturing, came to a close with the final demo day. The event marked the culmination of a journey that has guided the participating companies through the development, validation and presentation of proof-of-concept projects with high innovative potential, fostering dialogue between entrepreneurship, emerging technologies and the industrial sector.

Over the course of the nine-month programme, the selected start-ups and SMEs gained access to an ecosystem of multidisciplinary expertise comprising mentors, designers, researchers, technology partners, companies and professionals from Italy and abroad. Through training, assessment, matchmaking, co-design, prototyping and validation, Design Momentum has reaffirmed its mission: to accelerate collaboration between innovators and businesses in order to transform emerging ideas and technologies into concrete opportunities for industrial development and growth.

Designtech continues to support all the start-ups and SMEs in the programme: BiomimX, D’Alesio&Santoro, Framis Italia, Isola Design Group, Metis, Northern Light, Orsini, Studio Auriga, who took part in this second edition and praised its enthusiasm, the quality of the projects and the willingness to take on challenges throughout the entire acceleration programme. This was made possible thanks to the work of the mentors and experts who contributed to capacity-building and skills transfer activities, as well as the industrial partners who collaborated on the development of proofs of concept by providing know-how, case studies and opportunities for experimentation, and to the support of the Lombardy Region, whose co-funding from the 2021–2027 ERDF programme made it possible to implement the programme and strengthen the regional design-driven innovation ecosystem.

The demo day also provided an opportunity to engage in a broader discussion on the future competitiveness of Italy’s creative industries and the role that artificial intelligence can play in fostering new entrepreneurial capacity, accelerating innovation processes and strengthening the leadership of ‘Made in Italy’ in international markets.

This reflection has given rise to the Designtech AI Adoption Hub, a new initiative through which Designtech supports companies, start-ups and organisations in the responsible and informed adoption of artificial intelligence. The Hub aims to provide a neutral and independent environment in which businesses, subject-matter experts, technology partners and institutions can collaborate to transform interest in AI into concrete, sustainable and measurable outcomes.

The aim is to support the creative and manufacturing sectors in identifying opportunities with the highest added value, helping them to integrate artificial intelligence into their actual processes of design, product development, customer experience, organisation, manufacturing and supply chain management. The model includes AI Readiness Assessment services, the development of strategic roadmaps, ongoing training and AI literacy programmes, trusted guidance to support business decision-making, the selection of partners and technologies, as well as the implementation and monitoring of pilot projects and operational trials.

Rather than simply promoting the adoption of individual technologies, the AI Adoption Hub was established with the aim of helping businesses develop new in-house capabilities, build lasting expertise and transform the potential of artificial intelligence into tangible innovation, competitiveness and new opportunities for growth.

In a context where the next wave of AI will increasingly impact the physical world – from design to manufacturing, from materials to robotics, right through to built environments – Designtech aims to provide businesses with a point of reference that combines technology, domain expertise and industrial vision.
