Glutensens food safety solutions raise €1.05 million

Glutensens, a Milan-based start-up founded in 2023 that develops real-time food safety technologies, has announced that it has closed a €1.05 million seed round led by Farming Future, the National Technology Transfer Hub for agrifoodtech promoted by CDP Venture Capital, with the participation of the Fund for Female Entrepreneurship and ToSeed & Partners.

The capital raised will enable the development, validation and production of the electrochemical biosensor that detects infinitesimal traces of gluten in a matter of minutes, as well as consolidating the company’s presence on the Italian market. The start-up, a spin-off of the University of Milan, offers a solution that integrates advanced electrochemistry and artificial intelligence algorithms, providing a digital response that is immediately stored in the cloud and can be connected to HACCP systems in restaurants, canteens, laboratories and industries.

“Thanks to this round, we are moving from scientific validation to industrial scale,” said Chiara Di Lorenzo, co-founder and chief scientific officer of the start-up (pictured), in a statement. “Our goal is to make food safety verifiable in real time, wherever food is prepared.”

“Glutensens is a shining example of how technology transfer can generate industrial value and offer tangible benefits for millions of gluten-sensitive consumers, transforming scientific research into concrete and accessible solutions,” says Claudia Pingue, senior partner and head of the Technology Transfer Fund at CDP Venture Capital.

In the coming months, Glutensens will focus on development, validation and start of production to bring its technology to the best kitchens in Italy, on completing product and process certifications together with accredited laboratories and the University of Milan, on expanding the research and development team and on implementing the sales force in Italy and Europe to subsequently extend the platform to other allergens and launch detection-as-a-service.

“The speed of detection and accuracy of measurement represent a new competitive standard,” adds Andrea Zanella, CEO of Glutensens. “We ensure compliance with current regulations and consumer safety, while reducing the risk of product recalls, laboratory costs and reputational risks for the catering and food industries.”
