Movopack, a company specialising in reusable packaging for retail, e-commerce and B2B logistics, which had already closed a €2.3 million funding round in 2024 and begun its expansion into the UK market, has today announced that it has also entered the French market through the acquisition of all the assets of Hipli, a company based in Le Havre and a pioneer in the reusable packaging sector in France. The deal marks a new step in Movopack’s international expansion and strengthens its position among the leading players in reusable secondary packaging in Europe.
Founded in Milan in 2021 by Tomaso Torriani, Alberto Cisco and Andrea Cipollone (pictured), Movopack develops returnable and customisable packaging solutions, designed to be reused more than 20 times and to help brands significantly reduce the environmental impact of their packaging.
According to a preliminary life-cycle assessment carried out by third-party organisations, each Movopack packaging unit, if reused 20 times, reduces packaging waste by up to 98% and CO₂ emissions by up to 84% compared to single-use alternatives. With over 100 clients across Italy and the UK, including Decathlon Italia, Yamamay and OVS, the company is backed by 360 Capital, Greiner Innoventures and Techstars. The acquisition of Hipli’s assets now enables the Milan-based company to extend this model to the French market, integrating it with local expertise.
In France, Hipli has become a leading player in the circular packaging sector for e-commerce. Founded in 2020, the start-up has developed packaging solutions that can be reused up to 100 times, supported by digital tools that facilitate their tracking and adoption. Hipli has over 350 clients, including major brands well known to French consumers, and has expanded its operations to several European markets, including the UK, Germany, Italy and the Netherlands. Movopack has acquired all of Hipli’s assets, including the brand, intellectual property, operational assets and stock, thereby consolidating its position in the French market.
Business development will initially be led by a French representative from Movopack, before being handed over to a local team of native-speaking professionals, who will ensure full alignment with the specific characteristics of the French market. Each customer will be supported with bespoke solutions throughout a transition period, utilising the existing infrastructure in Le Havre, whilst the management of Hipli packs already in circulation will become the responsibility of Movopack, in direct coordination with customers to ensure continuity of service and maximum operational flexibility.
With an e-commerce market valued at €196.4 billion by 2025 according to FEVAD, and the e-commerce packaging segment estimated by Grand View Research to be worth approximately $3.2 billion by 2025, France represents one of the most significant markets in Europe. Through this transaction, the financial terms of which have not been disclosed, Movopack aims to accelerate its growth and strengthen its position in the European sustainable packaging sector, with the goal of managing 10 million packaging units across the country over the next 24 months.
“Our entry into France represents a strategic move for us in a key market for European e-commerce and retail. With this move, we are strengthening Movopack’s international growth trajectory and laying the foundations for consolidating our presence in the continent’s major markets. “Our aim is to offer brands and retailers a scalable, efficient reusable packaging model that is tailored to the operational needs of individual countries, guiding more and more customers towards 100% customised and sustainable circular solutions,” said Tomaso Torriani, CEO and co-founder of Movopack, in a statement.
