BeDimensional, a deep-tech company specialising in the industrial production of two-dimensional materials, is taking a new step in its scaling-up process with the development of a production facility in the Livorno area, in the municipality of Collesalvetti, at the Amerigo Vespucci Tuscan freight village. The initiative forms part of the Memorandum of Understanding signed by BeDimensional, the municipality of Collesalvetti and the Region of Tuscany to support the consolidation and development of the company’s presence in the region.
The project involves the installation of production lines for two-dimensional crystals with an annual production capacity of several dozen tonnes, intended for use in various strategic sectors such as lithium-ion batteries.
This investment also consolidates BeDimensional’s strategic position in the industrial production of two-dimensional crystals. The result is a strengthened technological leadership, capable of promoting an increasingly sustainable and innovative industry in the field of innovative materials – a sector that is key to making Europe less dependent on Asian powers.
The investment marks a new phase in BeDimensional’s industrial growth. The plan is to start production in 2028, creating 20 new jobs, followed by a gradual expansion.
The project is underpinned by a solid financial structure: the total investment will be primarily funded by the EIB (European Investment Bank) and private and institutional investors, including CDP Venture Capital, Eureka! Venture, NovaCapital, ENINext and the Boldrocchi Group, alongside the possibility of entering into further agreements with public and private entities to accelerate and scale up the investment plan. This foundation reinforces the path towards full industrialisation already embarked upon by the company with the inauguration of BEFAB, the BeDimensional Fabrication Plant in Genoa, at the end of 2024.
The new industrial hub in Tuscany has been established to support an ambitious expansion and consolidate BeDimensional’s position as a global leader in the two-dimensional crystal market. The agreement highlights the company’s competitive advantage in terms of quality and cost, with the aim of producing two-dimensional crystals with atomic-level control on an industrial scale at competitive market prices, thanks to proprietary, patented technology that has already been validated at an industrial level.
“The project in Tuscany represents a strategic milestone for BeDimensional,” says Vittorio Pellegrini, CEO of BeDimensional, in a statement. “We are not just increasing our production capacity: we are laying the industrial and technological foundations to bring two-dimensional crystals to a global scale, with a clear competitive advantage in terms of quality, cost and process sustainability. And we are doing this in Italy because we believe in the potential of the European ecosystem.”
“Tuscany continues to invest resolutely in a development model based on innovation, industrial quality and the ability to attract high-tech companies,” says Eugenio Giani, President of the Tuscany Region. “BeDimensional’s initiative is a step in exactly this direction, strengthening a strategic supply chain and creating the conditions for new skilled employment and sustainable growth. “As a Region, we support these initiatives because we believe that the competitiveness of our region depends on supporting organisations capable of transforming research and know-how into advanced industrial production, thereby retaining value, skills and long-term development within Tuscany.”
“This is the kind of investment we want to attract and support in Tuscany: solid, innovative and with a clear industrial vision,” comments Leonardo Marras, Councillor for the Economy, Tourism and Agriculture for the Region of Tuscany. “BeDimensional’s project in Collesalvetti demonstrates that, even in the most advanced sectors, our region is competitive and capable of offering tangible opportunities for development.” “We are talking about an initiative that creates skilled jobs, strengthens our production capacity and is fully in line with the path towards sustainability that we are pursuing as a region. Our aim is to continue creating a favourable environment for those who invest in innovation and manufacturing, thereby consolidating a modern and dynamic industrial base.”
BeDimensional manufactures and develops high-quality few-layer graphene (FLG) and few-layer hexagonal boron nitride (FLhBN), materials consisting of just a few atomic layers that form the core of the company’s technological offering. The ability to produce them on an industrial scale, combined with the advantages in terms of quality, cost and process efficiency, opens up opportunities for high-value-added applications in the energy, electronics, paints, coatings, smart textiles and composites sectors.
